PROKOFIEV: Symphony No. 1 in D Major “Classical”

EXPERIENCE the enduring appeal of Prokofiev and Haydn.  Their names may not often show up in the same sentence, but Haydn was the inspiration for this Russian composer’s “Classical” Symphony and it’s fascinating to hear how he incorporated his own unique sound with that of Papa Haydn.  Even after composing 100 symphonies, the masterful Haydn was able to pen highly original and dramatic material for #101 which was met with immediate and overwhelming public and critical acclaim.

The CCO is proud to present two of the Junior Division winners from our 2015 Lee Strebel Memorial Youth Concerto Competition: Raymond Feng (piano) and Sophia Werner (violin).  We are actively committed to being a resource for musical excellence, education, and opportunity for students throughout our region.  The Strebel Fund for Community Enrichment, administered through the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, enables us to present these accomplished young artists in concert.

Be sure to arrive early for the Pre-concert Chat at 6:45pm to meet our young soloists and hear Music Director Cornelia Lammli Orth’s thoughts about the evening’s program.  Pre-concert Chats are always free to all ticket-holders.

[Please note that our third winner, Benjamin Doane (cello) will be unable to perform on March 11th but we are working to reschedule his appearance with the CCO for a later date.]
