Sarah Chandler

Second Clarinet

“The CCO truly feels like a “hometown chamber orchestra.”  Musicians have close relations with members of the community, many of whom are members of the board.  One of my most memorable CCO concerts was when I cracked a rib coughing during a chamber music concert.  We had just finished the Prokofiev Quintet and I was listening to another group perform while sitting in the audience in the church.  I had just made it through the Prokofiev without having a single coughing fit and evidently my body then just let loose.  Only later did I learn I had viral pneumonia!  Thankfully that didn’t get in the way of my performing a work I had wanted to do for ages, with some great colleagues.”

Clarinetist Sarah Chandler has had an extensive career as an orchestral and chamber musician and instructor.  She was Lecturer of Clarinet at Binghamton University for six years and currently teaches at Opus Ithaca.  She holds a Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University and a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa, where her clarinet teachers included Russell Dagon, Robert Marcellus, Clark Brody and Maurita Murphy-Mead.  She was a prize winner at the International Clarinet Society Competition three times and won the grand prize in 1988.  Her orchestral experience includes the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, the Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra, the Tri-Cities Opera Orchestra, and the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, where she has served as Second Clarinet since 2007.
