George Myers is the former Director of Orchestras at Ithaca High School, and is a native of Brooklyn, New York.  As a member of the Catskill Chamber Players and the Catskill String Quartet, he has performed a large body of 20th century literature, working with, among others, John Cage, Virgil Thomson, George Crumb and Lou Harrison.  The quartet premiered new works of Henry Brant and a jazz quartet of Frank Bennett in appearances at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. He was on the faculty of Hamilton College for 15 years, teaching violin, viola and chamber music.  Mr. Myers was a member of the Glimmerglass Opera orchestra for 15 years, beginning at its inception. For 10 years he was principal violist with the Utica Symphony, and served in that capacity with a number of upstate regional orchestras.  He has twice toured as a soloist in Europe with the Ostschweizer Kammerorchester, and performed as a member of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Italy.  Since 1986, as a member of the Aurora Quintet, he had been in residence at Ithaca College’s Summer Chamber Music Institute, where he conducted the string chamber orchestra and coached quartets of young musicians from across the country.  For many years, in association with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra of which he is a member, his IHS Orchestra presented a youth concert for approximately 800 second-graders. Each summer, he travels to Interlochen, Michigan, where his colleagues in the Aurora Quintet reside, to perform in the Glen Arbor Music Festival.  In 2012, he served as a guest conductor for the Binghamton University Symphony Orchestra.  Mr. Myers holds an MM in Viola Performance from SUNY Binghamton, where he studied with Toby Appel.
